Harpers Ferry National Historic Park

Educator

Sierra first began her work in education as a National Park Ranger in the education branch of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. For six years she led and facilitated school visits from around the globe. She created, organized, and led programs for groups ranging in size from 15 to 300 students and teachers and served as the Director of the Theater in the Park Program.

In 2016, Sierra earned her degree in English and Theater with a minor in Classics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with honors, she moved to Boston and worked as a teaching artist, actor, and historical interpreter. She toured with multiple theater companies performing productions of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for middle and high school audiences throughout New England. In addition to performing for the students, Sierra led workshops on the dramatic material and coached students on how to approach Shakespeare’s works from a fresh perspective.

Sierra worked as a teaching artist for the Greater Boston Stage Company; there she designed and taught curriculums on improvisation, sketch comedy, the building blocks of performance and Shakespearean verse. She also worked as a historical interpreter at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum where she conducted tours as a costumed interpreter for guests from around the world in an interactive historical experience. She worked directly with students both in person at the museum and virtually with students from around the world through the museum’s educational outreach program.

Students ranged in age and English proficiency. These classes were held both virtually and in person at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
